Spanish insurance major MAPFRE has appointed Juan Bernal as its new Group Chief Investment Officer (CIO), with effect from 1 May.

Bernal will take over from José Luis Jiménez Guajardo-Fajardo who has held the position since September 2015. Jiménez became Deputy CFO (Chief Financial Officer) in January 2024 after a restructure was announced in October 2023.

That reshuffle to its leadership tier also included naming Miguel Ángel Rosa as the new CEO of MAPFRE RE, with current CEO Eduardo Pérez de Lema taking on the role of CEO of International Insurance and Fernando Mata taking on the role of third vice chairman while staying on as the group's CFO.

Raúl Costilla was appointed as the Group's Chief Business Officer, responsible for directing the group's sales and technical strategy globally.

The company’s investment portfolio has done well in recent years. Full year 2023 net realised gains had a €91 million impact on the result, in line with the previous year compared to €100.4 million in 2022. The year end total for portfolio was €43.95 billion in 2023, a 6.2% rise on 2022.

MAPFRE’s earnings are split between its Iberian operations, where it is one of the largest financial firms in Spain, and a large footprint in several Latin American markets where it is also a major player.

Stepping into the role of CIO

Bernal has more than 25 years of experience in financial market and has previously worked in asset management, private banking and personal banking in numerous financial institutions in Spain.

He began his professional career at Banco Santander Central Hispano and has been working at CaixaBank since 2012. Most recently, he held the position of general manager of CaixaBank Asset Management, among other roles.

Since 2019, he has been the chairman of SpainNAB, the leading impact investment association in Spain, and is also a member of the Global Steering Group for Impact Investing (GSG).

MAPFRE manages more than €50 billion and has a team of more than 175 working in its investment area, distributed across three main management centres located in Madrid, Boston, and Sao Paulo.

MAPFRE Asset Management is the principal non-bank fund manager in Spain, with nearly €38 billion in assets. It offers mutual funds, from traditional (fixed income, equity, mixed and global) to alternative, aimed at both retail and institutional profiles, with a focus on socially responsible investments.
